Producer, director, actress and now history maker, Ms. Debbie Allen accepted the Governors Award at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, becoming the first black woman to receive the award.

Allen received the award for her numerous contributions to television, as well as her continued commitment to philanthropic and charitable organizations. During her acceptance speech she told women ‘from Texas to Afghanistan’ to ‘claim your power’.

Per the Emmy

s website, the Governors Award is presented to those with an “outstanding achievement in the arts and sciences or management of television which is either of a cumulative nature or so extraordinary and universal in nature as to go beyond the scope of the Emmy Awards presented in the categories and areas of the competition.”

Congratulations to Debbie Allen for getting her flowers 💐💐now while we can still celebrate her.
