Ahmaud Arbery’s Killers Finally Arrested

Updated: May 11, 2020

On May 7th, a day before Ahmaud Arbery’s 26th birthday, father and son predators, Gregory McMichael, 64, and Travis McMichael, 34, was arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault. Both have been taken to the Glynn County jail. It took 74 days and pressure from the community to get something to happen! Our justice system is not just for black lives.

A third man who has been identified as William Bryan is expected to be arrested and charged in the days to come, according to local news networks.

The Georgia Attorney General’s Office issued a statement stating, “We are grateful the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken quick and decisive action. This tragedy cannot be undone, but this is the first step in what I am confident will be a swift road to justice.”

25-year-old, Ahmaud Arbery was killed while jogging on Sunday February 23, 2020, in the afternoon. The McMichalel’s statements on the initial police report do not line up with the now leaked video footage of the murdered 25-year-old. The full police report of the incident can be read HERE.

Lee Merritt, the attorney representing the Arbery family, says, "Mr. Arbery is only observed running down the road. And even if there's something that we didn't see off camera, these men gave statements to law enforcement," said Merritt. "And they said the worst that he was ever accused of was looking into a home that was under construction. That is by no stretch of the imagination a burglary or any crime whatsoever. And so without a crime, there's no purpose for citizens arrest."

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr released a statement on Twitter Tuesday referencing a video that shows the killing of unarmed Arbery.

Carr tweeted, "Based on the video footage and news reports that I have seen, I am deeply concerned with the events surrounding the shooting of Ahmaud Arbery," he said. “I expect justice to be carried out as swiftly as possible and I stand ready to support GBI Director Reynolds, DA Durden and the local community."

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation plans to hold a news conference on Friday May 8th at 9 a.m. Make sure everyone tunes in for up to date information.
