Attention Deficit Disorder In Children – Why Behavior Therapy Really Does Work

Sometimes I wonder if many doctors really understand what is going on inside an ADHD child’s brain. The reality is that as he cannot process all the information coming at him, there are a few problems. That is basically what attention deficit disorder in children is! Prescribing pills may actually help to relieve some of the symptoms but that is as far as they can go. Some doctors and many parents are convinced that this is the only way to go and anything for a quiet life! What is going on in the brain? Attention deficit disorder in children is a slight slowing down in the neurotransmitters and the result is distraction, hyperactivity, not staying on task, lack of attention and also impulsive behavior. That does not sound like such a big deal but unfortunately other co mor meratol bid conditions exist which may complicate the picture a little. ADHD may be just the tip of the iceberg and depression and anxiety, or ODD, oppositional defiance disorder or Aspergers may be present as well. The results of this mild mental disorder are that the child cannot focus at all and may have real problems in following and keeping up at school. The behavior problems that we note are probably due in part to some of the frustration that your child feels because he just cannot keep up and uses the only means he has at his disposal to get some attention or to ask for help. Most of the medical authorities from the AAP to the CDC are now strongly in favor of using behavior modification as the central part of any treatment program for attention deficit disorder in children.
